Level Up: Pixels, Play & Progress
Creating an exhibition for the Museum of Atlanta (MODA)
Level Up showcases video games as the 21st century’s form of storytelling. Through their immersive nature, video games blur the lines between the physical and digital, making them more compelling than other forms of story. This exhibition brings into question: can video games, as a form of story, inspire change and make the world a better place?
In creating this exhibition, we considered that we would have guests at various levels of video game knowledge. We wanted to ensure that all guests could enjoy the exhibition and come out of there with a new perspective on video games.
- The exhibition began with a timeline of narrative video games showing how storytelling transformed with advancements in technology.

We divided the games into suggested pathways in the brochure to allow guests to intake the games in different ways. The “pixels” shown in the brochure corresponded with those in the exhibition labels. The labels contained information about the stories in the video games and explained why the video game was selected for the exhibition.
